NYRR 9+1 Program for Guaranteed Entry to the ING New York City Marathon
Members of New York Road Runners since January of a calendar year who completed at least nine NYRR-scored, qualifying races and volunteered for one event that year are eligible for guaranteed entry to the next year’s ING New York City Marathon. The volunteer component of this “9+1 Program” supports NYRR’s community-service mission and our goal of encouraging volunteerism among our members. Adding to our corps of race volunteers also helps NYRR ensure a safe and cooperative race environment at our events throughout the year.
Please note the following important points about the 9+1 Program for 2010:
For eligibility for guaranteed entry to the ING New York City Marathon 2011, an applicant must:
- be a member of NYRR as of January 31, 2010, throughout the year 2010, and at the time of application to the marathon;
- complete nine (9) NYRR-scored, qualifying races during 2010;
- volunteer for one (1) NYRR event posted on the volunteer website (weekly races, registration/pickup, kiosk) during 2010. [Volunteer Registration]
Volunteer capacity is limited for each race. Over the course of the year, about 12,000 volunteer spots are available—more than enough to accommodate the number of NYRR members who qualify for marathon guaranteed entry. In fact, more than 2,000 volunteer spots went unfilled in 2009—most at races early in the year (January-March) and at larger races, such as half-marathons. Races late in the year tend to reach their volunteer capacity early. Due to this limited capacity, volunteers MUST register early in 2010 to ensure a volunteer spot at a 2010 race. Volunteering at 2010 races satisfies the volunteering requirement for the 2011 marathon only—not the 2010 marathon.
Volunteering is not limited to race-day duties. Volunteer spots are also available at race registration and at our Central Park kiosk at Engineers’ Gate.
- You can meet your 9+1 Program volunteering requirement by sending a substitute volunteer. This person simply indicates at the race that he/she is volunteering on your behalf.
