This year, more than 6,000 runners in the ING New York City Marathon have pledged to endure 26.2 miles to raise money for charity. They are expected to raise $21 million for more than 75 different charities.
NYRR directly funds its own youth programs through Team for Kids, a group of 1,200 adult runners who raise money to put free running-based physical education programs in schools and community centers. Because of the support of runners in Team for Kids, 100,000 kids a week in 45 states are involved in NYRR youth programs. In addition, NYRR created and supports 30 youth fitness programs in South Africa. Kids in NYRR's running-based fitness programs build the healthy habit of being physically active while they learn to set and achieve goals.
Because of the efforts of Team for Kids, NYRR's youth programs are free to the kids who need them most. NYRR's goal is to have its youth programs in all 50 states, reaching 120,000 kids, by the end of 2010.
While it's too late to join this year's ING New York City Marathon as a runner, it's not too late to Join In and Take Part as a supporter of Team for Kids and the youth programs the Team supports.
Help more kids create the habit of physical fitness and learn how to set and achieve goals by donating to Team for Kids here.
