Daily Tip #10: How to Deal with the Unexpected

Wednesday, October 26

Marathons don’t always go according to plan. Your watchword: Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. Here’s how:

Bad weather: Check the forecast before you leave your home or hotel on race morning, and follow the layering guidelines here. For rain, wear or pack a water-resistant top layer made of high-tech breathable fabric, and socks that are lightweight and synthetic. Petroleum jelly or another anti-chafing product can help protect your feet. For cold, have gloves, a warm, close-fitting cap, and plenty of extra layers for the start village at Fort Wadsworth.

An injury now: If you develop an injury between now and November 6, you’ll need to consider whether to run or cancel. If you choose to run, readjust your time goals. If you need to cancel, the cancellation policy allows you to defer your entry and run New York in 2012—though it’s your responsibility to reapply next year according to the procedures and deadlines and to pay all 2012 fees. If you’re unable to run this year, consider volunteering, and follow the race with the Mobile Spectator App and TrackMyRunners™.

Trouble on race day: If you need medical help at the start, along the course, or at the finish, visit a medical aid station, where trained volunteers and staff will help you. Make sure that your friends and family know your race (bib) number and the Runner Information Hotline number (800.496.6193) in case you don’t finish on schedule.
