The Finish

Daily Tip #16 - Monday, October 26

Imagine it's November 1 and you've just completed the ING New York City Marathon. What happens next?

You'll receive a finisher medal -- a lasting symbol of your accomplishment -- around your neck. Wear it proudly!

Take a finisher food/fluid bag when it's handed to you. Start eating and drinking as soon as you can. Rehydrating and replacing nutrients and calories used during the race will help aid your recovery.

You'll get a HeatSheet wrap. Hold onto it even if you don't feel cold. The wrap keeps your body temperature stable after such intense activity, and it's a great souvenir.

Keep moving through the finisher area. Not only does it ease congestion, but it also speeds your recovery. You may feel a bit dizzy, but stopping, sitting, or lying down can make it worse. Keep walking, even if it's at a slow pace, until you regain equilibrium.

Medical personnel will be stationed throughout the finish area. Don't hesitate to ask them for assistance or advice.

The clear UPS bag that you checked according to your race number at the start of the race will be available for pick-up after you finish. Find the UPS truck that corresponds to your race number, along West Drive in Central Park, about a half-mile from the finish line.

Select a nearby restaurant or café to reunite with loved ones. Meet there to avoid the crowds. Know how to get back to your hotel in case you find yourself on your own. Tour buses will be waiting north of 86th Street. If you need other transportation, the subway is your best bet. Click here to review routes on the MTA website.

Plan to attend the Post-Race Party Presented by Clear Channel to celebrate your accomplishment! Wear your medal for a free photo opportunity; you'll also be able to check your results online courtesy of T-Mobile.
