Continental Airlines International Friendship Run |
| November 6, 2010 The ING New York City Marathon is one of the most internbational races in the world and it takes place in one of the world's most international cities. So it's appropriate that the Continental Airlines International Friendship Run, held the day before the marathon through the streets of Midtown Manhattan, has become a cherished Marathon Weekend tradition. This year's 32nd running took place on a brisk Saturday morning from the United Nations to Central Parlk. It began with the presentation of the Abebe Bikila Award, given to an individal who has made an outstanding contribution to the sport of distance running; this year's award went to two-time Olympic medalist and 2005 ING New York City Marathon champion Paul Tergat of Kenya. Led by flag bearers from dozens of countries, including past New York City Marathon champions Franca Fiacconi of Italy and Liz McColgan of Great Britain, the 4K leisurely run took more than 15,000 marathoners through sun-splashed streets to finish just north of Columbus Circle. "This is where the world comes to run and this is the world's city," said NYRR president and CEO and marathon race director Mary Wittenberg. "It's you we want to celebrate." |
