Ethiopia's Gebre Gebremariam had never run a marathon before. It didn’t stop him from handling the distance, the challenging course, and perhaps the deepest professional field in ING New York City Marathon history to become the race's 2010 champion in a time of 2:08:14—the sixth-fastest in race history. Emmanuel Mutai (2:09:18) and Moses Kigen Kipkosgei (2:10:39), both of Kenya, took second and third.

Gebremariam became the race's second male Ethiopian winner, after course record-holder Tesfaye Jifar in 2001. His time of 2:08:14 was the sixth-fastest in race history.
Emmanuel Mutai of Kenya stayed with Gebremariam the longest, and he held on for second place in 2:09:18.
Moses Kigen Kipkosgei, also of Kenya, made a late-race move to take third place in 2:10:39.
